A-B-Z Framework for Digitalization Projects

Planning mode feels productive, and it is where digitalization projects go to die. I use the A-B-Z framework to cut through it: where you stand now, the goal, and the next step. You do not need the whole roadmap to start today.

Many companies get stuck in planning mode, a state known as "analysis paralysis", where no action is taken.

Having a long-term goal is good.

I wrote about this before:

ERP is dead, long live ERP
The monolithic ERP is finished, even though ERP itself is not. I explain why accounting-first systems break under the speed and volume of shop floor data, and h

But it can be overwhelming when you think about how to get there. A lot of steps to figure out, a lot of unknowns.

Some projects run so long that the software or industry landscape has changed by the time the plan is finished.

How do you combat this over-planning mode?

With the A-B-Z Framework, you don’t need to know all the steps to reach your goal.

All you need today is your A-B-Z:

  • Where do you stand now (A)?
  • What is the first goal (Z)?
  • What is the next step (B)?

That’s it.

You don’t need to know steps C, D, or E yet. Focus on those and you will procrastinate instead of act.

Assess where you are (A), pick your direction (Z), find your next step (B). Then take it, today.

You will discover the rest along the way.

You can read more about the A-B-Z Framework and about Analysis Paralysis here.

Four Digitalisation Pitfalls to Avoid
Digitalisation goes wrong in predictable ways, and I hear the same four traps again and again. This piece names them: the urgency trap, the attention trap, the
